The Program on Extremism at The George Washington University, in collaboration with the Global Coalition’s Counter Daesh Communications Cell (CDCC) at the Foreign, Commonwealth, and Development Office (FCDO) and the International Centre for the Study of Radicalisation (ICSR) at King’s College London, hosted a landmark event titled The Global Coalition against Daesh: Countering Terrorism Beyond the Battlefield — Achievements, Research, and Future Directions. This event marked the 10th anniversary of the Global Coalition to Defeat Daesh, marking a decade of collaborative achievements and critical research in counter-terrorism.

Moderated by Omar Mohammed, Senior Researcher at the Program on Extremism, the event exemplified the Program’s successful outreach to policymakers and academia, fostering vital discourse between experts and decision-makers. Distinguished keynote speakers from the Global Coalition, including Alanood Ebrahim Al Khalifa, First Secretary of the Embassy of the Kingdom of Bahrain in the UK, and Martyn Warr OBE, Head of the CDCC and former British Consul General in Erbil, shared insights on the Coalition’s progress and the indispensable role of international cooperation in combating violent extremism.

Prominent scholars in terrorism studies from the UK, France, and Spain contributed their expertise. Shiraz Maher, Co-Director of ICSR, explored current challenges in extremist networks; Hugo Micheron, Assistant Professor at Sciences Po Paris School of International Affairs, examined radicalization patterns across Europe; and Sergio Altuna, Senior Researcher at the Program on Extremism, presented the Jihadist Narratives Analysis Project, emphasizing the influence of research in informing robust counter-terrorism policies.

This event underscores the Program on Extremism’s commitment to advancing research-driven strategies, building cross-sector alliances, and developing evidence-based policies to combat the worldwide ever-evolving threat of violent extremism.
