Daesh wali (mayor) of Albu Kamal, Muhammad al-Murshid, flees Daesh territory – Reports from life under Daesh

In response, several Daesh security forces members were arrested, accused of aiding al-Murshid in his escape. The desertion comes after the high-profile desertion of the emir in Shu’aytat in southeastern Dayr al-Zawr province. Whether al-Murshid succeeded in fleeing Daesh territory remains unclear, or whether he has simply gone to ground. Albu Kamal has been under pressure since New Syrian Army forces attacked the city, having recently taken in a large number of refugees from Anbar province, Iraq. The breakdown of command and control and the loss of confidence in its security forces show Daesh’s vulnerability even in its heretofore more secure hinterlands.
